Home to the JFRD Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Jacksonville Fire/Rescue Station #1, more affectionately known as "THE ROCK", is located in downtown Jacksonville. It is one of the JFRD's busiest and largest stations, housing Engine 1, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, The Command Van, Safety 1 (Safety Officer), and Fire 1 (Battalion Chief).
The men of The Rock are responsible for a very diverse first due territory. Besides the many residences and small businesses, we have a large industrial area, as well as the Jacksonville Ship Yards. We are 1st due to Downtown's high rise district which includes the 37 story Modis Building and 43 story Bank of America Building. We also have the sports complex which includes Alltel Stadium (Home of the Jacksonville Jaguars, The Florida/Georgia game, The ACC Championship Game, The Gator Bowl and Super Bowl XXXIX), The Baseball Grounds (Home of the Jacksonville Suns) and The Veteran's Arena (Host to our local hockey team, many concerts and our annual Guns N Hoses Boxing Event). Also, going through our 1st due territory is Jacksonville's elaborate Skyway system, which is an elevated monorail that travels above the city through Downtown, San Marco, and parts of the Riverside area of Jacksonville.

CITY COUNCIL MEMBER: Email Reggie Gaffney, Council-at-Large Email Sam Newby The Jacksonville Fire department opened Fire Station #4 in 1897, On Adams St, between Broad and Jefferson. The current building housing station #4 was built in 1927, replacing the still standing original structure. The addition of a ladder company to Station 4 required the move to an increased in size station house. A high pressure unit was housed at # 4 during the period the city maintained the high pressure hydrant system. The turbulent 1960s saw the area of LaVilla go through a downward turn in economics, and during the civil unrest that swept the country, Fire Station 4 was even taken over by rioters for a few short hours! The large wooden two story houses that lined the streets of the neighborhood kept the station busy during the 1970s, as it seemed the constant ringing of the bells meant another structure, or two, was ablaze. The 80s and 90s brought the razing of many dwellings and the empty lots seemed endless. New commercial endeavors now make up the bulk of the oldLaVilla area, but Station 4 still stands as a testament to the bygone days. Now known as the LaVilla Brickhouse to its current crews, it has been renovated by duty personnel to restore the flavor of yesterday, while still sending firefighters out the door, with echoes of yesteryear’s firemen shouts still faint in the air. |

COUNCIL MEMBER: Jim Love, E-Mail Jim Love COUNCIL MEMBER Warren Jones, E-Mail Warren Jones Established in 1927, Station 10 has evolved in to one of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department’s largest and most important stations. The station now houses Engine 10, an advanced life support engine, Ladder 10, a Safety Car, and a Battalion Chief. In addition to responding to emergencies in the area, Station 10 also oversees the staffing of 3 other fire districts in the JFRD’s second battalion. Station 10 also is responsible for overtime staffing of the entire department. Station 10 has the nickname of “The Penitentiary”, in honor of the scores of firefighters that have been assigned to the station as punishment throughout the years. Always known as one of Jacksonville’s busiest fire stations, Jacksonville Fire Department officials would use the station as a punishment assignment, figuring firefighters would be too busy to get in trouble. Punished firefighters soon began to call the station home, referring to their employee I.D. numbers as their inmate number. To this day, many of the “Inmates” have never left. Others have done several different tours of duty, always volunteering to come back home to Station 10. |
